A franchise named in honor of the great state in which they play, the Houston Texans played their first season in 2002 as an expansion team to fill the void in Houston after the departure of the Oilers to Tennessee. The logo of the Texans is a bull's head with the Texas flag's colors (red, white and blue) and the famous Texas Lone Star as its eye. Starting off their inaugural season in style, the Houston Texans shocked the Dallas Cowboys with a 19-10 victory in their first I-45/Lone Star State rival game. Tight End Billy Miller scored their franchise's first touchdown in that game, but the player of the year for the Texans would have to be quarterback David Carr, who had to withstand a poor offensive line resulting in an NFL record for most times sacked, 76 times. The Houston Texans went on to have an average first season for an expansion team simply trying to gain a foothold in an extremely competitive league. Originally utilizing the team building skills of Coach Dom Capers, the Texans hired Coach Gary Kubiak after a disappointing 2005 season. The Houston Texans currently play at beautiful Reliant Stadium, where they have played since their inaugural season in 2002.

Past Seasons

The Houston Texans finished with an 8-8 record, the most wins in franchise history and while that was an accomplishment in and of its own, head coach Gary Kubiak is looking to some of his draft picks to make an immediate impact on the team, Xavier Adibi one of them as he backs up Demarco Ryan.

The Texans are also happy with last year’s steals in the draft, rookie Steve Slanton who lead all rookie with 1,282 rushing yards and 1,659 yards from scrimmage and receiver Andre Johnson who led the NFL with 115 receptions and 1575 receiving yards.

In this years draft, the director of college scouting, Dale Strahm was very high on the Texans 1st pick, LB Brian Cushing, calling him a “full-throttle player” who is “intense eating his breakfast, intense in the weight room and very intense when he’s on the field,” Strahm states on the Texans web site.  Other picks include Cincinnati DE Connor Barwin, Alabama C Antoine Caldwell, New Mexico CB Glover Quinn, Tight Ends James Casey out of Rice and Anthony Hill out of NC State.  “What a Great find.  I mean, what a great find for us here,” Coach Strahm said of his 6th pick in the draft, Utah CB Brice McCain. 

It is said that the Texans are slowly building a dynasty that will rival the dynasties of the past.  Coach Kubiak would rather wait until his team posts more than 8 wins in a season to start talking of such things.  Be sure to catch the Texans as they begin building their dynasty.
