Expect Chiefs to force the Run Game
The Houston Texans come into Arrowhead stadium riding a disappointing 4-game losing streak but confident that they can right the ship and the team has decided that Case Keenum is the man to begin the turnaround while Matt Schaub nurses an ankle and foot injury.
“We’re struggling, and we’re looking for a spark,” Head Coach Gary Kubiak said. “I think he deserves an opportunity to go out there. It’s a tough place to play. It’s a tough place to get your first start and all that good stuff. But I’m not sending him out there by himself. I’m sending him out there with his football team, and the guys understand that.”
The Kansas City Chiefs, on the other hand, are stil undefeated with a 6-0 record and don’t seem to be slowing down regardless of what many pundits describe as a weak schedule.
Great tickets/seats are still available!
The Houston Texans came away with a lot of positives away from their first preseason game besides the final outcome of 27-13. With 18 players out due to injuries including 10 starters, Head Coach Gary Kubiak had the opportunity to see some of the younger players perform…something that doesn’t always happen.
“When you’re chasing free agents, you promise these kids you’re going to give them a chance. To bring them in and have them stand around for a few weeks and never really get an opportunity, you don’t feel good about that as a coach. I feel good about it.”
The Texans are looking to repeat their outcome this week as they face the 1-1 Miami Dolphins at home this Saturday at 8 pm. Tickets are still available!
After a successful lisfranc surgery in the off season (mid-foot fracture) QB Matt Schaub has declared himself healthy to begin training camp but will miss the Texan’s June mini camp. Backup QB T.J. Yates has been taking the snaps in the teams OTA’s and is thankful for the experience with the first team.
“I didn’t get this chance last year and now that I got the chance to work with the ones while Matt (Schaub) out is awesome for me because I’m really making sure I make the most of these reps. You don’t really come by these reps often. I got a chance to really work with the ones and get better and do things I didn’t have a chance to do last off season.” QB T.J. Yates
But before anyone draws any conclusions of a quarterback controversy, rest assured there is none. Schaub is the man and Yates has locked up the #2 spot so the only slot left will be between veteran John Beck and rookie Casey Keenum. But, getting Gary Kubiak to admit that will take some time.
“To me they (Keenum and Beck) are competing with T.J.,” said Kubiak. “Matt’s our starter and everybody is competing with T.J. John has the mental capacity and he understands everything we’re doing. I think we can really help John with the way he plays the game so we’re trying to change some of the things he does. Time will tell.”
The Texans recently signed former Dallas CB/S Alan Ball to replace Jason Allen who signed on with the Bengals in March. Ball will be reunited with former Dallas head coach and current Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
“Alan knows the system because he played for Wade,” coach Gary Kubiak said.
“He looks good. He fit in real fast. He’s competing hard. This is a good fit for us. He can make us better. We’re glad to have him,” Wade said of Ball.
The Texans begin mini camp at the Methodist Training Center on Tuesday with both veterans and younger players expected to attend.
