Texans sign free agent QB John Beck

The Texans have signed veteran free agent quarterback , who will compete with T.J. Yates and undrafted rookie Case Keenum for the backup role to .

Beck (6-2, 215), a second-round draft pick out of Brigham Young in 2007, spent the last three seasons with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins run a very similar offensive system to the Texans’ under Mike and Kyle Shanahan.

Schaub is recovering from a Lisfranc injury and will not participate in the team portions of organized team activities (OTAs), which begin May 21. That will give Yates, Keenum and Beck plenty of reps leading up to training camp. Yates has a leg up in the competition after starting seven games for the Texans, including two in the playoffs, as a rookie last season.

Beck, 30, has started seven games in his career — four with the Miami Dolphins as a rookie in 2007 and three with the Redskins in 2011. He has thrown for 1,417 yards with a 58.6 completion percentage, three touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 67.6 passer rating.
